Connecting the Dots

The Will Of A Man

On this cold and rainy first day of December, I received a surprise text message today around 3:30pm. It was Guerilla Will, a longtime friend and well known host in many community events in our area. We have known each other for about 10 years now but never on a personal level. When I met Guerilla Will for the first time, he was 22 years old. A young, confident man who had the same arrogance as any young 22 year old man. He had "The-World-Is-Mine" mentality. Not that it’s a bad thing... ahem.. I was the same way at that age. Actually, I’ll admit... I was worse.

But now he's 33. I can feel the growth in his speaking and understanding as we dove into diverse conversations such as marriages, careers, Christianity, and death. As always, he dons a youthful smile with his collection of word play. One of the many reasons why hosting an event is his forté. His conversations jump like a a toddler at a playground; playfully moving from one conversation to another. His eyes look up to contemplate. He begins to connect the dots to his chef career which began at the very regimented Outback Steakhouse. He begins to remember the mental discipline needed to ride the bus from his house to culinary school to his work every day. But God lightened his mental strain, as the restaurant manager arranged to drive him instead of taking the bus.

A gentle giant, standing at 6-0 ft, who acknowledges several times that God has answered much of his prayers and has remained faithful to him. His whole demeanor lights up as he begins to talk about the divine intervention of meeting his wife and how a Buddhist temple taught him that his wife is a blessing from God. As the conversation continued, I couldn’t help to think back at the time where Guerilla and I really connected in a richer way when we both sat down, broke bread, and studied the Bible.  His greatest foundation and attribute, I must say, is his Christian roots.  The fellowship since then has been enriching.

Our nonchalant coffee conversation continued and it was very much refreshing. We talked about the 757 bboys scene, 757 bboy history, and our recent fallen friends (rest in Jesus, Christian Orpilla and Mike Miller). To see his growth from a young man to a wiser man was admirable and very much well-received. As any good moment begins....subsequently, it must end. We dap, say peace and take home a mutual found respect

Looking forward to growing more fruitful conversations in the near future with Guerilla...until then, we’ll let life go it’s course and learn from it. It’ll make connecting the dots a lot more enlightening....
