Breakin Bread 9 : Transitions
Breakin' Bread 9 has come and gone. The turnout was off the chain. Many people brought their young ones to the event in order to expose them to the Hip Hop Culture. Many cyphers endured that mass of energy from each individual. There was even 2 circles that formed during one of the breaks. I love when that happens. Its like 1 star bursting into 2 planets.
Again, Chichos had been accommodating to my needs. They donated 100 dollars to the prize money, donated some of the proceeds of the pizza buffet to RadioActive Cardboard. The staff there was always so receptive and hospitable. Savon, the acting manager, always checked on if everything was okay on my end. Nadia, the bar manager, was also hospitable every time I went up to the bar.
There was also b-boys who donated more to the prize and overhead such as Bgirl Genesis (50 dollars-from Florida), B-boy Matt Diggs (50 dollars to the prize money), and Korban (undisclosed amount to the overhead). These donations helped offset much of our costs but also gave more to the winner of BB.
Earvin Marcella, Gavin Sands, and Larry Sands worked the door entry with poise, calmness and welcoming demeanor. They disseminated the information to each dancer and spectator so each person walking in the door were well informed.
Art vendors were Fernando Hernandez, Ted Lucero, and Matt Diggs. Each artist all from the Hampton Roads region. Fernando Hernandez donated a hat with his graffiti on it to the champion. Ted Lucero donated a 8x10 canvas painting to the winner. Much of the attendees expressed much positive remarks about the art vendors present.
The battles were intense as always. There were Richmond b-boys (804) and North Carolina b-boys who had attended. The out of town b-boys always brings a different element and energy to the circles. We are always blessed to have them travel this far to bring that energy and break bread with our region.
Big congrats to Diz187 or Kid Dizon for taking home the win against Key Tee in a 3 round Finals. Altogether, there were 33 contestants who had signed up. It was exciting to see the whole competition unfold from the prelims to the top 4. Also, big congrats to J-Lin for taking home the Muchado Battle 757 Award.
After the jam, Mordecai and I were finally able to eat a pizza and talk about life in general. Both our lives have changed since having kids. We were lucky enough to have good wives in allowing us to do what we passionately love to do... Break Bread with like-minded creative people. 5th dimension.
Mordecai on the tables and myself on stage for a rare photo of us. This was right after the finals.
